1. Leaning or wavy fence lines
A fence that leans in multiple spots usually means the posts have rotted below the soil line — a repair might hold for a season, but it won’t last.
2. Soft or crumbling wood at the base
Press a screwdriver into the bottom of a wood post. If it sinks in easily, rot has already set in below the surface.
3. Rust streaks or bent panels on metal fencing
Surface rust can often be treated, but structural rust or bent, misaligned panels are a sign it’s time to replace that section — or the whole run.
4. Cracked, warped, or discolored vinyl
Vinyl is low-maintenance but not indestructible. Cracking panels after a hard freeze or impact usually can’t be patched invisibly.
